Every hero needs a flaw. Every villain needs a reason. And every story needs a best friend (or rival!). During this camp, writers will craft unforgettable protagonists, scene-stealing side characters, and deep friendships that drive conflict and plot. We’ll explore backstory, motivation, foils, big choices, and rich world-building—moving beyond simple descriptions to build layered, fully realized humans on the page. By week’s end, students will have written a bold, character-driven short story featuring a hero worth rooting for.

Using Your Voice: Speechwriting for Social Change Using Your Voice: Speechwriting for Social Change

May 2nd – 10 am – 1 pm

special performance to follow at 1 pm

What if your words could actually do something? What if you could change minds, persuade people to care about an issue, and directly impact the world around you with just your voice?

In this interactive workshop, writers will explore how our voices can inspire change. Participants will discover how language becomes power by learning the basics of speechwriting and persuasive storytelling. By the end of the workshop, each writer will have earned the confidence to perform a short speech about something they deeply care about with the purpose of inspiring social action.

Invent your own chimera: an animal that is a combination of two or more animals, such as a fox-owl or a pig-monkey. Then, use that animal, or animals, in a story and/or report. Are they monstrous or misunderstood? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What problems do they need to overcome? Get creative and have fun!

November 8th – 10 am – 1pm. Murder Mystery

@thebookiesbookstore. 2085 S Holly St, Denver, 80222

Someone has been murdered? Who? We don’t know because we haven’t created them yet! But who did it? Maybe you? But who are you? Wait, you haven’t been created yet either? And who will take up the task of solving this mystery? Also you?

In the Denver Writes version of this classic, writers create their own characters, then invite them to a party where ultimately, something terrible will happen. Writers will have to explain in story how it couldn’t have been them that committed the crime, or was it? And at the end our group of amateur detectives will determine who exactly did the crime.
Colorado Gives Day is coming up on December 9th, t Colorado Gives Day is coming up on December 9th, the largest giving event in Colorado, and a day that can really impact how Denver Writes operates in 2026.

We’re sending this out now because, it actually starts November 1st, as the total amount of donations made to Denver Writes from November 1st to December 9th will determine how much of the Colorado Gives Day Fund we receive.

Donations do not need to be made through the Colorado Gives Website and ANY donation including workshop tuition or cash donations will be added to our cumulative total.

However, donating through the Colorado Gives Website yields additional benefits to Denver Writes. For example, a new recurring donation made through the Colorado Gives Website between November 1st and December 9th, will be matched up to $100. This can be between $1 or $100.

Additionally there are several bonus days where your Donations could benefit greatly. Between Giving Tuesday, December 2nd and Colorado Gives Day, December 9th, Colorado Gives will have daily, hourly, and random awards given to organizations based on when people donate.

We know that there are always a lot of organizations asking for donations and we know that this year especially difficult for most, but any and every donation helps. Telling as many people about our organization and sharing us helps.

You can donate directly to Denver Writes via Colorado Gives here:
