Volunteer Profile: Ratty Boi Bio by Unknown Denver Writes Participant, Aged 13

One of our most treasured volunteers is of course, Ratty boy, or as we call him “Real Muscular Rat”. He came to our program when we found him drinking curdled milk in a ditch a few years ago. While his fur was matted, and his eyes were bloodshot, he fit right in with our kids (probably because of those things). Nowadays, you can find him at workshops gnawing blankly on a piece of metal, or affectionately scratching at ankles. If you come to see him, make sure you bring him a ladle of sewer goo, one of his favorite delicacies (we assume it reminds him of home). Watch him skuttle, squirm, or flop around with us! Come to Denver Writes today and meet this wee little guy yourself.

Him on a good day.

Icarus – Chris, 17

Last night I dreamed of Icarus

As he fell from the sky

After making headway

With wax wings to fly.

Last night I dreamed of freedom

In every shape and form

Because freedom

Is something given not born.

Last night I dreamed of fear

And the way it takes a toll

On the mind and the body

And the moments it stole.

Last night I dreamed of lightning

And the way it shakes the earth

Binding and frightening

And something in reverse.

You see

Last night I dreamt of Icarus

Careening from the sky

Heading towards the mountains

Where river nymphs lie.

And Apollo plays his lyre

In a way that sets some kind of fire

In the minds

And hearts

Of those who desire.

Last night I dreamt of Icarus

And his want for freedom

And I can see

Why Apollo wanted to meet him.

OnDenver Spotlight on Denver Writes

I was recently contacted by Libby from OnDenver, and she wanted to include Denver Writes in their weekly non-profit spotlight! I was nervous and uncomfortable at first, but after a while I really got into the interview and gave a good amount (maybe too much) of information. It is a little weird/surreal to watch/listen to myself — the only other interviews I’ve done for Denver Writes have been radio only — but I really like how this turned out, it does a great job spotlighting what we do and shines a great light on our wonderful partner BookBar!

More updates are on the way, stay tuned!

September Volunteer Spotlight: Maryanna Brunkhorst

Each month, Denver Writes highlights phenomenal volunteers without which the work we do would not be possible. This is an opportunity to get to know them just a little bit better!
