Kevin Peterson, Program Director

Kevin started with Denver Writes three years ago, first as a volunteer, and then Program Director. He found out about Denver Writes, the same way most people do, while on vacation in California, then worked his way backwards into the organization. Working in just about every creative field from child actor to Casa Bonita, he managed to hone his writing skills and is somehow also able to be an illustrator, animator, poet, comic book creator, and playwright, has had poems and writing published, plays performed with local theatre organizations and high schools, and has had artwork appear a couple of television shows that are no longer on the air, one you may have seen but definitely not the other.

And after all of that, being a part of Denver Writes is absolutely the most creatively rewarding experience of his life.

He enjoys puns (the worse, the better) and making people feel happy and knows way too much about Disney Animation.

Nicole Gordiyenko, Lead Volunteer

Nicole is a linguist by day, a writer by night, and an all-around general connoisseur of language. She developed her early affinity for writing in Kindergarten, where she was encouraged to put together colored paper “books,” but always felt limited by the time she had in class to devote to this activity. Thus, she began spending most of her time writing – after school, sometimes during class, and sometimes under her blankets with a flashlight when she was supposed to be sleeping. The thought of creating a complex imaginary world was so enticing that she couldn’t break away. Nicole now recognizes how valuable it is for children to develop an early love for story-telling and language. That is how she found her way to Denver Writes in 2018. She hopes that by volunteering she can help create a stimulating environment where kids have ample time to pursue their own imaginary worlds, and so far being able to hear their stories has been one of her most rewarding experiences to date!

Jordan Davidson, Intern

Natalie Maka, Intern

Natalie would say she has more books than friends. May be factual, may not be, who knows? A junior in high school, Natalie would much rather spend the day reading over doing her homework.

Jen Walden, Board Treasurer

JenWalden

Jen’s passion for writing took off at age 7 when her story about a ski adventure was published and submitted in a young authors competition. Fast forward many years, a BS in Communication and Psychology, an MS in Criminology, a stint in Corporate America, three years as a flight attendant collecting priceless experiences, and a first novel, and she finally lands at Denver Writes!
With her heart being drawn to opportunities with youth, Jen is now focusing on education through work in high schools, teaching 4th graders about Colorado at the History Colorado Center, and her dedication to the creative young writers who flourish because of Denver Writes. Jen loves being able to give back to this writing community knowing the sense of accomplishment each kid experiences is nothing short of amazing!
